So I am in love. The wikipedia is one of the COOLEST sites ever.
On the internet its only occassionally you will find a site that you’ll visit a few times and go ‘gee that was handy’ and then you keep returning and after a while you are there all the time because its the best site to help with that problem.
I grew similarly enamoured with google back in the day.
So yeah, instead of doing a general google search for info lately i have headed over to the wikipedia. its just so cool.
wikis are a really cool concept. the ultimate would be if all the info from the little wikis around the world could be put into one big one like the wikipedia – but maybe the wikipedia wouldnt have to be the ultimate source of info but could link you to a specialist wiki elsewhere.
I think the Current Events page is amazing because it reports a lot of news that isnt in your generic mainstream news, plus because its a wiki it leads you off to other topics about the current events so your background info is instantly available. Its like the ‘Would you like to know more’ thing in Starship Troopers but way less annoying!!! 😀
I am sure people have talked about it before but i havent gone searching to find if it is so – but i see wikis as the perfect example of what the people who created HTML wanted webpages to be. when i first started using the web and making webpages and reading about that stuff back in ’96 the idea was you would visit a web page with information about a subject and you would have a word in the text that would link to another page with all info about that topic, but the web hasnt evolved like that. but wikis are ALL about doing that. its kind of cool that there is this tool for getting back to the basics of what this crazy free for all we enjoy was originally created for.
But yeah – today i was pressing the Random article link and reading stuff and following links and then getting bored with a certain topic progressiona nd hitting Random article again. Anyways the last page i looked at was the one about Logic. logic is cool but the topic and study of is enough to hurt your brain!!!!!!!!!1
And they have a huge page about her highness – Madonna. of course living with a madonna fangirl for many years (my sister) i already knew 90% of the info on that page. 😀
gah – there were so many typos in this post….thats what you get for writing things at 5am when you havent been to bed yet. T.T
