i liked reading this column. i certainly dont consider myself a purist – but i do prefer subs to dubs. but i feel that way about any foreign film or tv show i watch – if its in another language i want to see subtitles – not suffer with dubbing which is usually lame.
but i am just as happy to watch a dubbed anime if its the only way to see it. what i really dont like is when they cut the thing to shreds to make them more palatable to western audiences or to make it ‘appropriate’ for the age group they think it is aimed at. Cardcaptor Sakura is a perfect example of this. i have only so far seen the evil Cardcaptors, but i have some of the manga so i know how the story should be and it makes me want to throw things at the tv when i watch Cardcaptors.
another problem with the english dubbing of anime is they seem to use the same people over and over. ARGH!
